Woodson Bridge SRA

It was past 4 when we finally left the exciting travel plaza parking lot, and headed down the rather pretty and scenic South Road which seemed to have at least three campgrounds all in a cluster. The one we wanted, though, was the Sacramento River State Wildlife Reserve, an “environmental” preserve and state park with natural grasses and no dump station and generally designed to be as close to its original state as possible.

Going down the lane, the distant mountains had patches of snow, and there was farmland and orchards and later a river. Really wonderfully pretty. The campground is lusciously green, and oozing with wildlife, some of which is making me itch this morning (multiple mosquito bites: supposedly my blood tastes good).

Not long after we’d selected our space and Don had skillfully backed into it, the park host showed up to introduce himself, as park hosts are wont to do. Don asked him about hosting and how he liked it and we ended up having an interesting chat for the next hour. I’ll probably go more into the volunteer-specific stuff on Raven’s RV as at the time of writing I’m deprived of coffee and need time to grok.

But I did find out that the large red and black beetle that became friendly with both the Dons (guess what the volunteer was called?) was a box elm beetle, and that there were ticks (but not the lymes disease carrying species) and that we would be covered in tree debris in the morning, which we were. The trees are in full production of pollen, and everywhere we look the acorns are sprouting little baby oaks. It’s really rather neat to see the beginnings of an oak tree.

All night and all day there are little pattering noises–the sound of stuff landing on top of our rig. If we wait long enough one of them will probably become a baby oak. ;)

Don lit a fire–this time we took along some charcoal–and we took care of a month’s worth of shredding and junk. My stack of magazines is getting smaller and more manageable.
