Watch the sunrise on a winter solstice
Filed in Living an Interesting LifeMy body clock woke me up at a little before seven, giving me ample opportunity to snooze. It was already light out, because dawn starts before sunrise. However, there was something quite magical about turning 180 degrees in my bed, opening up the stubborn little curtains of the over-cab window and watching the gradually brightening glow where the sun would eventually pop over the horizon.
Today is the solstice, and from this evening onwards we will start, a few seconds at a time, to get longer days.
I’m one of those people who gets depressed in the winter, especially in December when we’re all supposed to be celebrating. The impact of the seasons turning is tangible for me. The return of the light is something that, for millenia, humans have been waiting for.
Everything was still until the first blob of light coalesced over the horizon, which for me consists of a fence and a neighboring RV. Then, birds started chirping–the dawn chorus. They felt better, and I felt better too.
And then, much to the cats’ disgust, I turned around and went to sleep for another two hours. ;)
Suggestion: watch the sun rise on a winter solstice, and spare a moment to recognize that the light is coming back. Since you’ve quite obviously missed the 2007 one, feel free to substitute any sunrise. It’s rather neat to track the changing colors and texture of the sun as it climbs up through the sky.

I enjoyed what we had of a sunrise yesterday, which was a opaque! December’s overcast skies make me forget about sunlight all together some days. It seems to me that the return of light is more noticeable than the decrease of it.

I find the same…winter always seems to catch me by surprise. But I do look forward to the returning light :)
