Whoo-eeee!

Filed in Blog, Daily Photo

After a lovely overnight in the railroad RV park (or somesuch) we went on to Dunsmuir. I went looking for historical markers and found pretty much none, though I did have a nice iced coffee and bagel in an old brick cafe. They also had a “leave a book take a book” bookshelf, so I amused myself by looking for BookCrossing labels (none), sneaking Markeroni bookmarks into the books, and eventually trading three paperback novels for a hardback copy of the next book after The Kite Runner. ;)

The post office was not boring. The postlady had a wicked sense of humor and a rather important package was sent safely on its way. Bonus!

Then I attempted the walk to Mossbrae Falls. I’m currently recovering. You see, it’s a hundred degrees out (I only know this because I walked past somebody’s outdoor thermometer…on the way back!), and the railroad tracks that you walk besides are about 75% without shade. You have the sun beating down on you and then reflecting back off the path, which mostly consists of slightly compacted track rubble interspersed with blissful sections of nice-on-the-feet dirt. Woot.

No trains came by, which is a blessing as the path runs scarily close to the tracks, but I was on edge the whole time. I stopped after about half a mile and realized my heart was working overtime — not good. Yes, I did have water with me.

I need to come back when it’s much cooler and I haven’t already walked up and down a historic district, exploring and using up my exercise points.
