16/48 Whitby, North Yorkshire
Filed in Blogathon 2007Whitby is by a long way my favorite town in Yorkshire. Famous for its connection to Dracula, it was a regular day trip for my family and in fact we’d often go there on New Year’s Day.
Whitby is the quintessential fishing town, and one of its specialties is kippers, or smoked herring. Though Mam could stand neither the taste nor the smell, she would permit Dad and I to take over the kitchen and cook them up when we’d been to Whitby. (And then we’d have to leave the windows open.)
It’s a town built up a steep hill, dominated by stunning Whitby Abbey. There are supposed to be 199 steps down the hill, but even though we’ve counted them we’ve never actually managed to match our counts. Whitby is also famous for its connection with Captain James Cook.
A typical visit would usually have us parking up at the abbey, then walking down the hill for a lunch, some souvenirs, and some kippers. Sometimes we would go up to the Cook memorial. Sometimes we would visit the abbey. And sometimes we would walk along the piers or on the very rocky beach.
Whitby is not tacky like many seaside towns (obviously, it has its moments). It was not a town for touring Victorians, but a thriving fishing village. Even now, it retains that character. I would go back there in a heartbeat.
PS
- I had Trader Ming satay noodles for lunch.
- All three cats are now on my desk!
- We have an alarm which speaks in a “human” voice and can be set to warn us of stuff like computers crashing. Don set it to alert me every half-hour that it was time to write. Is that geek love, or what?

Oh I DREAM of seeing places like this in person someday. I love history and sometimes US history just isn’t “old” enough for me. Great post!
The noodles sound yummy.
Oh and Whitby is sister-city to Anchorage, Alaska!
And as for Don, that is geek love at its finest for sure. :-)

Glad you enjoyed Whitby. I never get tired of the town (I live nearby), its history and the stunning Yorkshire Moors countryside.
I was so inspired that I created a website earlier this year: http://www.dracula-in-whitby.com
I’d love to hear your thoughts about this new site - all Whitbyites welcome!
