I’ve been going to Stockton lately on a fairly regular basis, ostensibly to attend a series of travel talks at the local college but also to go landmark-hunting with Amber. Last week I recognized a place I hadn’t been to since my first visit to Stockton in 1996, and realized then how much the city had changed.
My one impression of Stockton was that it was a hole–run-down, full of transients and druggies, scary. I realized that while there are still some scary neighborhoods, they are no longer downtown. It’s much better than it was. I am enjoying getting to know this city; I think it will always be a somewhat gritty place, but the park at Weber Point is lovely and the historic buildings are a delight.
