Weaverville Fourth of July parade

Filed in Blog, Photo Essays

I headed down to Weaverville for their Fourth of July celebration. For once the smoke had cleared, leaving nice blue skies and large crowds–more people than I would have expected, so there was a very nice buzz.

This was my first ever Fourth of July parade. Normally we don’t do it because of the crowds, but the fireworks were canceled and I wanted to do something to mark the day. This was fun–I’ll definitely do it again!

This chappie from the newspaper stepped up as the first group arrived. I like photographing photographers. :)

The veterans headed up the parade. Everyone stood up for a standing ovation that continued for the entire length of their march.

CHP bicycle cops kept an eye on things. I admit the novelty of seeing policemen on bicycles still hasn’t worn off after living here for almost eleven years. ;)

This tractor was pulling a bunch of kids sitting on little tractorlets. :)

Weaverville has a strong Chinese heritage, so it was fun to see a dragon whirling and dancing to the beat of a drum.

A group of very young cyclists came by, some with training wheels, some not quite in control. This little one really struck a chord in the crowd.

Some of the groups had a very serious message. For example, this one, from Trinity hospital, wanted to know “What’s in your colon?”

I’ll post some more pictures tomorrow. I took one of every group, but I’ll spare you that…I just picked out my favorites. :)

I don’t think real ones would have been allowed in public. It looks more real in the pic than it did in real life. ;)
