Galls are tree irritations. Something that a tree doesn’t like is placed on the tree; it scabs around the foreign body with a gall. I have a feeling that this one is a wasp gall, where the wasp itself builds the gall for its larvae.

Either way, there were lots of them, and it was only after I started doing some searching that I found out about the gall wasps.
