US-395 loop, 7th July

This was a loop I took south of Reno–down past Carson City, then east, then up US-95 alternate, and various little side trips. The 150 mile trip turned out to be about 230, I think. ;)

It was a different kind of scenery–more alpine than desert, though it’s evident from the heat and flora that it’s still “high desert”. First I took US-393 south and then looped round the old US-395. I noticed that there were many signs warning of drunk drivers and speeding. It seems it’s a real problem there. I stopped beside a marker and found a cross to a lady who was killed by a drunk driver when she was 33.

I came across the Bowers Mansion, which is a country house down there, and chatted to a friendly and helpful ranger who took my photograph.

Later I found one of those incongruous desert lakes (reservoirs, in other words) where a pelican sailed around, like a white swan, fishing for whatever it is that pelicans fish for–fishies?
