Thursday Thirteen: #10–13 Things I need to do before starting work tomorrow
Filed in BlogI’m tired of doing Thursday Thirteens on Wednesday. This will go live on Thursday, and I won’t be in the top twenty, and that’s okay. It’s not the Wednesday Thirteen, after all!

- Make sure I can find all three pairs of good-jeans-that-fit
- Make sure that at least two pairs of good-jeans-that-fit are clean and, more importantly, dry.
- Do a bra inventory, and make sure I have at least two pairs
- Wake up at 5am at least once so the shock won’t be as terrible
- Buy a box of power bars
- Buy some fruit
- Buy sandwich bread and sandwich fillings (I would have to work for an hour to pay for lunch out each day. Not. Gonna. Happen. I bought a $3 sandwich box in a back-to-school sale.)
- Write and forward-post enough articles to get me through to Monday morning.
- Find the one missing credit card bill and pay it.
- File all the filing I have so I can find the missing credit card bill.
- Buy some t-shirts that don’t have holes in.
- Find my inner professional. She’s in there somewhere.
- Tell myself, over and over again, that yes I will cope with working an eight-hour day and running a full-time part-time business on the side.

Leave your link in comments, and I’ll visit. If you post here often enough, your comments/links all count because I practice “safe” do-follow.)
The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

Good luck at the new job. It’s a hard thing to get used to after being away from it, but sounds like you’re preparing well. You’ll be fine.

OK…why do you have to find 3 pairs of jeans that fit before tomorrow?? You only wear one at a time, right?? As far as 8 hour a day jobs, its just like a bike….everything is gonna be groovy:) Happy TT and good luck.

Keep breathing, you’re going to be just fine.
And skip the extra 5am wakeup. No reason to miss sleep just for practice.

Don’t let the stress get to you; it’ll all be fine.
Have a great first day tomorrow!

I haven’t had a regular 8 hour/day M-F job in 5 years. I don’t know if I could ever go back (strike that, I’m not going back). I’ve gotten too used to project-based work and love the freedom.
I laughed at loud at #12. I don’t know if I ever had an inner professional. Or at least she gave up on me a long time ago.

Lori-also: It’s a long story, but basically our dryer needs to run three times to dry stuff. (Just. Don’t. Ask.) So, with so few pairs of jeans, it’s not uncommon to find all pairs either in the washer or damp in the dryer. Therefore, knowing that two pairs are available takes the pressure. (At $30 a pop for the ones that fit well and are comfortable–I’ve tried many kinds, believe me–I don’t want to buy more.)
Also, I will be working the next three days, *at least* (I don’t know my schedule beyond Sunday). I also run a business, so much of my evening time will be spent doing the important stuff on that, too. Really there is just not much time for anything else.
Also, I only just rediscovered my third pair of jeans where it had been hiding in my office for at least a month. Stuff hides.
It will be ok when I get into a routine, I’m sure.

OC: I finished my last 9-5 in 1996.
I’m hoping that this bit of income coupled with the money I’m making from my blog and other writing and Markeroni will eventually stabilize things enough so that I can quit and do *everything* based on the writing. For now, though, having a job is a good move for various reasons, even if it is pretty uncomfortable.

I hear you and feel your pain! I think it’s a constant struggle for writers and artists. That balance between making art and making money.
There’s definitely something to be said for a steady paycheck. Yup. I check the job boards every once in a while looking for that magical one that wouldn’t be too painful to commit to. haha.

Good luck with getting up at 5am, ugh! I sleep until 6:30am and that is still hard to pull off!
Thanks for visiting again!

I feel your pain, especially the waking up early one. I’m very jealous that you get to wear t-shirts and jeans so my sympathy is running a bit thin though. :P
Good luck!

Good luck on the new job. Don’t stress over the blog. It will still be here when you get home. Prepublishing is the way to insanity!

Thanks Robin. Actually, I seem to wake up that early anyhow, now. I guess it doesn’t take that long to set a new habit…

OC–this one will be fine once I get over the physical hump. Turns out getting up early is the easiest part. Being on my feet eight hours a day is very painful by the end of it. But I like the job, and my coworkers, and we seem to be a good team.

JL: Well, we do spend the day shunting heavy boxes around, sitting on the floor, sweating and generally being physical! It’s not a job for a suit.
I think when we go live, we get to wear a uniform apron or something.

Pussreboots: many thanks. Although I actually do prefer to do the prepub thing. That gives me a bit more space to work on the longer posts, i.e. the trip writeups with photos and the like. :)
