Thursday Thirteen: #16: 13 early impressions of RVing
Filed in RVing
- It is necessary to be very careful about what one brings into the RV, because storage space is at more of a premium than Silicon Valley real estate.
- Having such a dearth of storage makes you think very carefully about what is a need and what is just a want.
- Higher levels of organization are required to deal with the logistics of trash, shopping, laundry and washing up in much smaller than usual spaces. I bought a copy of the Flylady book for ideas.
- You wouldn’t believe how involved it is to go to the toilet.
- It is both easier and harder to keep things clean. Easier, because it’s smaller. Harder, because it’s cramped.
- Bookshelves will be a thing of the past.
- You can see birds right outside the window. So can the cats.
- The cats like to hide in their big cat cage, which is weird because when the door is closed they actually don’t like it at all.
- Campgrounds with wi-fi are a blessing, even if the wi-fi is flaky.
- So much light!
- Dry camping (not in a campground) is sort of exciting.
- Sewage dumping is an adventure all by itself.
- I think I’m really going to enjoy this lifestyle.

I don’t think it REALLY compares, but for a few months, my two children (11 and 14), my 85 pound doberman and I have been living in a 1200 sq. ft. house that we had bought for summers and are now going to rebuild and live in year round. Recently my husband joined our merry crew…and it is just so cramped!!! No private space. Nowhere to go to get away from the sounds of children bickering. We are moving into a rental in a few weeks while the house is being built and I can’t wait to just have more room.

Happy RVing. I used to do a lot of that with my family before I left for university.

Wow! It sounds like an adventure! I don’t think I could handle that since I am too much of a city girl and like my luxuries!

Hi, cool list!! When I go camping, (which isn’t all that often,) I don’t bring my laptop, so campgrounds with WI-FI seem weird to me. But, if all your doing is traveling, then it makes sense. I did a TT list too, it’s here: http://lifes-adventures.net
Cheers!!

I’m really jealous. I wouldn’t want to do it forever, but I’d love to just hit the road in an RV for a year. We joined my folks for a few weeks of their year-long journey and I just hated to come back.

I’ve never been in an RV but now I’m curious to try.

Di: At a guess we have about 200 square feet, some of which is the cab. ;)
OTOH, I’d go nuts as a family of four. Our mobile home was 728 square feet and I don’t think I would’ve stayed sane with kids in that case. So no, it doesn’t compare, but I do comprehend and you do have my sympathy :)

Pussreboots: Neat! Was it a fifth wheel, or a motorhome?

Robin: Maybe you’ll get a chance sometime. People are retiring earlier and earlier, so it’s eminently possible. In time we will probably become “workampers”–travel a bit, work a bit. As a writer I can supplement my work with odd jobs here and there. There is always something.

Nicholas: look for an RV show, you can poke around inside hundreds of them just for fun (and dodge the sales critters). If we ever come out to Florida we could always take you (both) out for a weekend. :)

It was a 17 foot motorhome. Imagine two adults and two kids crammed into it. But it was fun!

Wakela: I used to be that way, but this is more fun and no appearances to keep up, which is a good thing as I’m not great at that. ;)

Hi Noelle–thanks for visiting. :)
I’d be lost without internet…eventually we will get some satellite equipment so that our options are greater. I pretty much rely on it for work, you see…

Pussreboots: squeek! But yeah, I can imagine it would be fun.

The big advantage to it being so small was the ability to park in any standard sized parking spot we wanted to. It was about the same length as a big Suburban.

I see, I don’t like being without an internet connection for long either. Maybe I should bring my laptop camping next time….

Pussreboots: yes, that would be handy! We’ve had some interesting driving experiences with our rig. ;)

Noelle, if you’re only camping for a few days, just bring yourself and a notebook. I find computers a huge distraction on my tent camping trips, when really all I want to do is just sleep and watch bugs and get away from it all. :)
