20/48 Tintagel Castle
Filed in Blogathon 2007Legend has it that it’s King Arthur’s Castle. Partly on the mainland and partly on an almost-island reached by a bridge, it’s nothing if not impressive.
Tintagel is one of the most evocative places in Cornwall, and I love it. To reach it, one must descend a long road, so steep that a small sideline business has sprung up–Landrovers ferry the tired back up again. Then, you cross on a narrow bridge with rock and the crashing sea below.
There isn’t too much of the castle left–many outlines, but few of them tall. But you can go there and imagine what it used to be like, so exposed and remote and wild. In the winter it must have been bitter, even with all the shutters closed against the Cornish winds. But it was safe, hard to take–and the stuff of magical legends.
Marion Zimmer Bradley brought it to life in The Mists of Avalon. I’ve visited maybe twice or three times. I hope that one day I will once again stand on the edge of the cliff and look out to the sea, far, far below.

There’s something funky with the link…the only way to read the article and not the wikipedia is to click on the title.
Did that make any sense?

Mists of Avalon is fabulous. I have yet to read the book (I know, shame on me!), but the TNT movie with Julianna Margulies is wonderful. So much history/legend. :)

Buffra: You’d love it.
beautyredefined: Yes, it’s a great book. Shame the others were not as good, but I think it really stands alone. And I did love the series. It was well done.
Polli: for sure. :)
