Thursday Thirteen: #6 — 13 experiences I would never have had without a motorcycle
Filed in Motorcycling
- I would never have been riding along, gotten hit by something large and painful, and then taken my glasses out to find a large bumble bee drop out. It did not sting me. It was still alive but did not look splatted, so I left it under my bike to recuperate. When I returned, it had gone.
- I would never have had a squirrel stash a nut in the vee of my v-twin. The nut would never have ignited, and we would never have had to put out a little fire in the forecourt of our local gas station.
- Nor would I have had to almost do an emergency stop for a chipmunk crossing the road carrying a nut that must have been at least half its body weight.
- Nor would I have known that the effect of honking at squirrels was to make them leap vertically up in the air about three feet and land facing the other way, and have to stop the bike because I was laughing too hard to steer.
- I would never have tripped over my own feet trying to get off a falling cycle and fallen head-first down a ditch, dying of laughter.
- I would never have gotten the thumbs up and loud “You rock!” from the triage assistant as I rode into the household hazardous waste event, carrying used oil and other goodies. I guess they don’t get many motorcyclists.
- I would never have had to play dodge-the-tire when the trailer in front of me nonchalantly shed a wheel and carried on as though nothing had ever happened.
- I would never have made any toddlers almost tip over their strollers to get a better look at the bobble-head monster.
- I would never have achieved escape velocity by not noticing the speed bump and crossing it at, oh, something like 30 or 35 mph.
- I would never have failed to get through the gates at the winery because by the time I got my engine started and the helmet on the gates would have swung shut again. This I tried about three times, as I recall.
- I would never have learned the true meaning of “getting caught in a rain storm.”
- I would never have started Raven’s Roads or even, most likely, Markeroni
- I would never have developed a survivalist’s sense of humor. ;)

I’m turning into a bicyclist; already, I’ve got a few stories of my own like this.

I’ve never ridden on a motorcycle as either a passenger or a driver. My mom’s college boyfriend had one and they got in a bad wreck. She would’ve died had she not been wearing a helmet and as it was she wound up with a bunch of broken bones including a compound fracture of the leg, ouch! I think hearing about that killed any desire I might’ve had to go biking…
Happy TT!

Oh how I wish we had squirrels in Israel, just to try honking at them!

Oh, those are good!
I had a similar experience with honking at a rabbit once in high school. Too funny!
Have a great Thursday!

The only time I was on a motorbike I fell off and hurt very badly, so I’ll stick to my car… :-)
My TT teaches a geography lesson about my country.

susieJ, pussreboots, Suprina,: Thank you!
Janet Delighted to have made you laugh. :)
Susan: Good for you! Oddly, the last time I was on a bicycle I almost fell off it–it felt so flimsy!
MamaLee: Thanks! So, did you enjoy it?
CrimsonWife: Bummer! Yes, a full face helmet saved my face –literally-early on as a rider. I crashed (slowly) and landed flat on my face. The helmet stopped me breaking my nose.
I got right back on and rode some more. I just can’t fathom not being a rider–I loved it from the moment I set off on my first ride all those years ago. :)
Marina: Well, we *were* trying to stop it from becoming urban road kill!
JHS: Oh yes. Both of the above, and worth every moment too.
The trick to avoiding accidents is to ride defensively, always looking ahead, and always realizing that while I might be alert, 99% of the other drivers on the road might not be. I have to think for them, too.
