Thursday Thirteen–#15 13 things that living in motels has made me appreciate
Filed in Blog- Laundry. It’s no longer a case of staggering down a corridor with an armful of towels. It involves planning, timers, plastic bags, and organization, and warm clean clothes are a wonderful luxury.
- Safeway salads, sharing them with one fork.
- Soup. In the absence of microwaves, hot soup, the ultimate comfort food, is a rare luxury.
- Cafes that serve soup and crusty baguettes.
- Phone cards that make it possible to phone home.
- Dialup internet, as without it I would still be offline.
- My cats, for their snuggling and entertainment value and just for being there.
- My laptop computer.
- My former job. It was quite physically demanding and my muscles have toughened up over the last six weeks which makes it easier to heft boxes when I have to.
- Ice makers in motels and coolers which increase the options of road food just a little.
- Band-aids.
- Hand cream for drying out skin.
- Heat pads for when one overdoes it a bit.

I enjoy the occasional motel experience, but I wouldn’t want it all the time either! Good list. Stop by and see mine when you get a moment. :)

I am so sympathetic. When I moved to Maine in 2004, I came up here with no place to live, two cats and a Jeep full of stuff. I lived in hotels for a month while I looked for an apartment and then my parents came up with my furniture and belongs. My cats were incredibly traumatized.

What about people watching? When I travel (not often) I love being the observer. There are some interesting characters in this world. =o)

Hi Christy! I’m not traveling, really…we’re currently homeless after our mobile home park closed and sorting out stuff before we buy an RV and park it long enough to sort out our (now) two huge storage sheds. So I’m not really in vacation mode…just dealing. ;)

Hi Pussre
Just a matter of time :)
We have an RV picked out, and a city; just a case of mating the two. The last bit of business in the Bay Area should be complete tomorrow.

The laundry I feel in so many different ways! :-) Glad to see you still get to come online sometimes! :-)

Yeah, motels are a drag. At least you’re in the same one every night!!
It’ll all work out. Just keep on plugging away.

My parents just spent a year on the road in an RV. They’re retired now and had dreamed of this trip for years, and it turned out to be everything they’d dreamed of and more.
What are your plans? Will you be traveling or staying put somewhere?

Susan: Actually we’ve been moving between cities pretty constantly for the last two weeks. At a rough check it’s been six motels in five different cities so far. ;)

Robin: we’re taking things one step at a time, trying not to make plans. I think that one of my life’s lessons really is to live without planning. :-/ However, we do want to stay put at least long enough to sort out our stuff in the storage shed. I also want to get my citizenship. But, we’ll get the RV and then figure out where to park next. *grin*

Lynne: poor kitties and poor you! My cats seem to be slowly getting used to the idea. I hope they will enjoy staying put soon.
Did yours recover in the end?

Just think how much you’ll appreciate microwave ovens and high speed intrernet when you finally get settled!

Nicholas: no kidding! We do have a microwave but it’s a bit heavy to lug into motel rooms every night. ;)
Re: the email bouncing, you could try the domain annwn dot com with the username linda instead :) We still haven’t figured out what is going on with ravensroads although I did get an email there this morning that was a reply, so maybe it fixed itself.
