Bridge Bay itself
Isn’t this amazing? This is Bridge Bay itself, with the mountains and Lake Shasta in the background. Those things lined up in front are houseboats — like floating mobile homes.
The bridge at Bridge Bay
This spectacular bridge takes the interstate back down into Redding. It is the bridge for which the Bridge Bay resort is named, though when we went down there to look for a plaque we couldn’t find our way to the view. This is also where, last year, we saw the firefighting plane from Oregon which [...]
Raven awaits
When we set out on our road trip in January, we spent the first night at the rest area north of Redding. In the morning, a raven greeted me against a blue sky.
Machine-gun topiary
On my Christmas shopping day last November, I found this bizarre topiary outside Burger King in Redding, of all places. While he’s studded with little flowers, he also appears to be holding a machine gun. I’m not sure that’s what the topiarist had in mind. ;)
Giant reindeer
In Redding, the Sears parking lot is dominated by a giant glowing roebuck. ;) At night, it’s really pretty, but I was also rather tired from errand running and didn’t want to hike over there to get what would amount to a blurred blob of light. So, I took a photo as we passed on [...]
…And below
Here’s the view from below the bridge. When the trains go by, the metal seems to sing, and dozens of little lizards ran away in panic. The reflections and shadows were pretty neat, too.
Above…
This is Sims Bridge, the CCC bridge I was talking about in my photo essay a couple of days ago. Here, you’re looking towards the railroad which from time to time would send a long freight train spinning down its tracks. The bridge was quite a feat back in its day.
The real Sim City
I asked DH to leave the highway so that I could try and find a state historic landmark that was supposed to be in the area. We went the way I thought it was, I couldn’t see it, and things looked dangerously tight. So we turned around, and went the other way instead, down a [...]
A long steep hill
Coming out of Shasta, there’s a loooooong steep hill that is perhaps the longest straight from here to the summit. Things lumber up it, slowly. Things like us.
