We’ve been coming to New Hogan dam almost as long as we’ve known one another. It never occurred to me that there was an Old Hogan dam.

Whiskeytown Lake was flooded over a historic town, Whiskeytown. Now, all that remains is a beautiful scene and a state historic landmark designation.

Isn’t this amazing? This is Bridge Bay itself, with the mountains and Lake Shasta in the background. Those things lined up in front are houseboats — like floating mobile homes.

There is no lifeguard on duty at Lake Oroville. But I guess that’s okay. It looks as though you have to hike nearly a mile just to get to the water’s edge. And would get bogged down in mud long before then. Things like this really bring home how much of a drought we are [...]
