Steel Bridge Road

Steel Bridge Road

I’d heard that the Steel Bridge Road BLM recreation area has picnic tables and a campground. So we went to find them.

All sorts of blue

All sorts of blue

17 February 2009: The underpass which, when it’s not flooded, allows you to get from the campground at Carrillo State Beach to the beach without running across several lanes of coastal highway, is painted from top to toe with nautical scenes. It’s lovely.

The other side of the underpass

The other side of the underpass

16 February 2009: Here’s the other side of the walkway/underpass, in its own personal lake. The structure is painted top to toe with lovely sea-themed murals.

The Bidwell Bar bridge

The Bidwell Bar bridge

27 January 2009: This is the last set of pictures I took with my old Canon S70 before it died. (It may yet get resurrected; we’re looking for parts.) The Bidwell Bar bridge is considered to be the oldest suspension bridge in California, and it hangs out at Lake Oroville State Recreational Area. To reach [...]

The Bidwell Bar bridge

27 January 2009: This here is considered to be the oldest suspension bridge in California. It was moved from its original location to stop it from being drowned when Lake Oroville was created. I have more pictures which I’ll post as a photo essay sometime.

This is also where, last year, we saw the firefighting plane from Oregon which [...]

Over the bridge

Over the bridge

I’ve probably taken pictures of this bridge before, the one that takes you over the river into Rio Vista. But I love its girders and the play of shadows, and the fun whizz-clonk sound of cars hissing over it. One of the first dates Don ever took me on was a ride out to the [...]

…And below

…And below

Here’s the view from below the bridge. When the trains go by, the metal seems to sing, and dozens of little lizards ran away in panic. The reflections and shadows were pretty neat, too.

Above…

Above…

This is Sims Bridge, the CCC bridge I was talking about in my photo essay a couple of days ago. Here, you’re looking towards the railroad which from time to time would send a long freight train spinning down its tracks. The bridge was quite a feat back in its day.
