34/48 Sunnyvale

Filed in Blogathon 2007

I don’t mind if any of you need to go to bed, you know! Seriously, I know most of you are up way beyond your bedtimes. Even my cat is snoring. ;-)

I like Sunnyvale. It isn’t a great place for me energy-wise, but it’s fine if you’re a techie. Living here for nine or so years, it has definitely become home. I have grown to appreciate the history and its origins in the farming trade, and the fact that it used to be called Murphy’s Town. I like that its main streets are named for children in the Murphy family.

Over the years, I’ve come to be a local. I’m recognized in Trader Joe’s, for example. I have neighbors. Admittedly, I met most of them after we were all going to be parted, but still, it’s a neighborhood. I’ve been here long enough to see things change, and develop, and become interesting. Even today, there was something new: notice has been posted of the intend to build 36 town homes on top of our former homes. Public hearings. The wheels are in motion.

Sunnyvale is welcoming to small businesses. It has decent public transportation. There’s a water tower dressed up as a giant Libby’s fruit can, an old iron foundry and a little downtown. There’s even a labyrinth incorporated into the plaza near the train station. Walking it gives you a few minutes of peace and quiet in the busyness of the city. Oh, and it has a community garden. You can’t fault Sunnyvale for not being progressive. It really is.

But mostly I like Sunnyvale because of the Murphy connection, and because, ultimately, I do believe in Inverse Murphy–things can work out…if you let them.

Did I tell you that the wife of the founder of Stockton is Helen MURPHY Weber? Yep, baby sister of the founder of Sunnyvale, daughter of Martin Murphy who founded San Martin near Gilroy, and sister of the two Murphy brothers who founded Murphys (originally Murphy’s Camp) up in the Mother Lode area.

    Whoot.
