Name that bird
Filed in Daily Photo
When I had a couple of slices of dry bread left over, I tossed it out for the hordes of little birds that seem to flutter around here on a daily basis. This one looks like a sparrow, but I have no idea what kind. It has a little black and white streak on its head, and the female has little two-tone stripes. Any ideas?
The trouble with emigrating is that you grow up with one bird-set and learn about them when you’re young and can pick up information by osmosis. As you get older, you don’t pick up the information quite the same way. Not knowing the names of critters and plants here is a constant disappointment.

I looked it up in my bird book and found that the birds are ‘white crowned sparrows’. They are common in open woodlands, brushy grasslands, roadsides and parks. The book picture looks exactly like the one you took. I’ll bet you didn’t know I was into birds, did you?
