Rancho Tehama
Filed in Blog, RVingRight now it’s 5pm and I’m in Rancho Tehama, which seems to be for sale. We’re in the parking lot of a closed real estate office which has, at a guess, about a hundred listings here. The one we are looking at is on the far side of town, and is cheap probably because it’s way out of the way. On the other hand, that’s pretty much what we want.
I went on another nature walk this morning and got deliciously lost on a tiny little trail that I probably wasn’t supposed to be on, but whatever. It’s a nice feeling to be away from everyone — humans, town, computers, everyone. We left Woodson Bridge and then headed down to the Flying J to dump our tanks, which were overflowing. Then we went to Corning, ostensibly to look for real estate information, but also perhaps to find a hotspot. The library was closed but the chamber of commerce was open and I left laden with what-to-do magazines, maps, and information.
I then proceeded to bump into an E Clampus Vitus snarf which, as usual, was attached to a pub.
We did have some information about a listing in Rancho Tehama, which is the third largest town in this county and apparently Tehama is pronounced “te-hay-ma” not “te-haa-ma”. So we decided to go find the place. Wow. It is absolutely miles from anywhere. First one travels about 11 miles west of Corning and then heads up into pretty farmland. Then the road somewhat narrows and becomes three dimensional. I think it’s about a 20 mile drive to Corning, which isn’t a big place, and maybe another 30 to Red Bluff. There are certainly lots of trees and green stuff but we don’t know anything about its climate.
So, when Don gets done trying to find wireless, we’re going to head on up and look at the patch of land, and take it from there.

You’re pretty close to my old stomping grounds up there. (Yay, Redding.)
The thing to keep in mind when you’re poking around Tehama is that that’s the first place along the Sacramento that floods bad in the wintertime. (Woodson Bridge, where you were last night, is the second place.) It’s far enough downstream that there’s a lot of creeks that have flowed in below Shasta Dam (which keeps the river higher upstream a little more controlled), but it’s before the levee protection really kicks in, which means the water’s got a lot of room. You’ll notice that some of the houses are built higher, for exactly that reason.
So if you’re thinking of buying in Tehama, make sure you check the floodzones. Other than that, it’s a nice, quiet, little town.

Good advice! But, given the reputation of the homeowners’ association there and how the ocmmunity is organized, I think we’ve pretty much put this on the “no, not for us” list. Which means, most likely, that when we move we’ll move out of state.

MY HUSBAND & I HAVE PURCHASED A PROPERTY IN RANCHO TEHAMA FOR OUR RETIREMENT, MY SISTER & HER HUSBAND ARE ALREADY LIVING THERE. WE VISIT THEM OFTEN. I MUST ADMIT THAT I WAS AFRAID THAT I HAD MADE A MISTAKE. HOWEVER AFTER SITTING ON HER DECK AND WATCHING 11 DEERS FEED ON THE HILL, HUNDREDS OF BIRDS & BUNNYS, I AM SO HAPPY I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET THERE. I WILL NOT TAKE PART IN THE BULLCRAP & PETTY IN FIGHTING. PEOPLE ALWAYS WANT TO GRIPE ABOUT THE OFFICE , BUT DO NOT WANT TO DO THE JOB THEMSELVES (UNPAID) JUST THE SAME AS ANY HOMEOWNERS GROUP.YOU SPEND A COUPLE DAYS JUST WATCHING THE NATURE THERE AND YOU WILL BE HOOKED

Hi Patricia! That’s for sure…we stayed at Woodson Bridge and the place was literally teeming with wildlife. Rancho Tehama really isn’t going to work for what we need, though…it’s too bad, as it was pretty up there. Hope that retirement is not too far away for you and that you have a wonderful time when you do get up there. :)

Hi my name is Sandra in Sacramento and I purchased a lot in Rancho Tehama about 8 years ago. Which I have not done anything with yet. I know at first impression things are pretty rough and remote in appearance, however having attended only one town hall meeting to my embarassment, I need to do more. I did meet decent people who are trying to make a positive community life, away from the rush and hassle of it all. Being an original San Francisco person, moving to Sacramento 25 years ago, I still have hope, faith and a lot of prayers I will be able to make some type of contribution to the ranch. My goal is to get some consistent time away from my too busy job in Sacramento and start visiting Tehama and the town hall folks, at least once a month. This I know, “one step at a time”, people together make a difference. I found this site by accident, but appreciate all the things I have read tonight. Thanks to all

I am pretty sure that as time passes, you’ll find your niche there and be able to take part. I’m not bothered by the rawness of the area at all, and find it quite appealing.

My mother bought a home there, and it is really nice. The PROBLEM, there are at least 2, maybe 3, places along Rancho Tehama Road are atrochous! One burned out trailer, and another that looks like a toxic dump! Where is the home association on this! Dues went up, but the cleanup has gone nowhere! Please clean it up for those who are there, and for those who might want to relocate there, if it were cleaned up!!!

Susan’s mom should connect to the local association, if I can get an e-mail address, I can connect you directly to who I work with in Tehama. I am proud to announce with help of the association, I found someone to cleanup my vacant lot, last week. I also plan to attend an association meeting soon. There is a calendar for the year. Again, I am willing to share with I know.

Sorry to hear that…perhaps you could call the local police or the homeowners association and ask. They might be able to give you info from the horse’s mouth as it were. Maybe it’s just a bunch of bored kids, but even so it was a nasty surprise.
