Pico Road
Filed in Daily Photo
If you take the Vargas Road exit from I-680 near Fremont, Pico Road is to the north side of the freeway. With views of pretty farmland on one side (I even saw a deer, once) and the freeway on the other, it’s a nice place to rest–but also kind of surreal. It does, however, offer a nice moment of peace before you hit the worst of the Bay Area traffic.
If you’re feeling adventurous, continue along Vargas Road to the north, and when the road divides go straight. You’ll be on Morrison Canyon Road, quite possibly one of the teensiest roads in Fremont.

I used to live a couple of blocks from the base of Morrison Canyon, near the “road closed” sign they put up all summer, and/or whenever fire danger was high. I love it up on that hill, and how rural you can get within no distance at all of, say, Fremont BART. Folks saw mountain lions on the hill from the school half a block from our house, a couple of times.

I’ve never been to the top of Morrison Canyon, though it’s tempting. I know it’s a dead end. It is definitely a cool little corner of the world. :)
