The summit of Highway 242 in Oregon is one great big ancient lava flow. It’s particularly astonishing when you come out of the lush green forest into this blasted Mordor of a landscape. I went up to the little observation tower and almost blew away. The descent was the most technical road I’d ever done — very twisty — and I cheered when I got out of it and could go in a straight line. I hope to go back and do it again with 30,000+ more miles under my belt.

I ADORE this part of Oregon. I haven’t been over there in a few years though. Maybe that will be another summer-time goal for me.
