Birthday meme: Penicillin to the rescue

Filed in Blog

On the 14th of March 1942, Anne Miller became the first person to be successfully saved by penicillin. She had a streptococcal infection, and nothing was touching it. Her forward-thinking doctors obtained a small amount of what was then still an obscure and unproven drug, and injected it. Her 107-degree fever dropped overnight, she gained consciousness, and began to eat again.

It is interesting that “streptococcal” and “penicillin” are two words that I learned in my early teens, since we studied the history of medicine. I always though the story of how Fleming noted what was going on with the mold wars was very cool indeed. What I didn’t know that his discovery was more or less ignored for over a decade until scientists finally cottoned on to how important it really was. Well, duh.

Now, we have over-used antibiotics and created mega-bugs. This scares my chickens.

Mrs. Miller, on the other hand, lived to the ripe old age of 90.
