Orland Buttes
Filed in Blog, RVingWe hadn’t been able to enjoy much of it last night, so it was fun to discover a lovely view from our rig over Black Butte lake this morning. As with most Corps of Engineers property, this is a reservoir, but the man-madeness of this didn’t stop us from enjoying the bright blue water and distant mountains with their sugary snowy caps.
Our neighbors were interesting…one of them announced at the top of his voice that he’d gotten up at seven to take a shee-y-at. I’m still amazed that he managed to fit three whole syllables into the word.
The previous day I’d seen what looked like a snarf, so I went to go find it. After a night’s rest the campground looked really pretty with lots of grass, mature trees and meadows full of wildflowers. The sign was indeed a snarf, and the trailhead to a path which lead down to a monument made from the remnants of an old bridge, rendered obsolete in 1963 when the dam was put into service.
The path was clear and easy and led past pasture and a vast wealth of flowers and greenery. It was wonderfully pretty and I felt my spirits lifting as I wandered along, wondering when the heck I would come to the bridge. To my delight I eventually did, and saw that some of the old bridge’s girders had been turned into an arch over a pair of benches. There were picnic tables and a glorious view out over the lake back to the boat launch…and Harvey. :)
Coming back was quicker than going, even when I trod on a huge nail that pierced my shoe but, fortunately, not my foot. Still, my shoe’s soles are starting to feel very thin, and I think this pair has had its end. It’s a shame. I bought them for work last August, and they’ve had a lot of use and were remarkably comfortable from the get-go.
I got back a little after 11 to find Don turning the rig around so that the water could drain out of the bath. The parking space was so angled that the bath couldn’t drain at all. ;) We decided that since there was another campground on the same lake we’d give that a shot, and broke camp at a leisurely pace, ready to move on.

You’re at high wildflower season in some of the most beautiful places for it in the state.
This is one of my favorite places, and would make a great bike ride for the two of you:
