Not there yet

Filed in Blog

We’re not going to be out by midnight. I didn’t really expect that we would be. There was a reason we chose to rent the van for two days.

We did check out a storage place this morning, but the manager spoke such poor English that he couldn’t answer our questions, and the unit was inside, upstairs and about half a mile down a corridor–not much use. Not just that, but there were extra hidden charges beyond what we were quoted (compulsory insurance and a requirement to buy their locks) so we were not impressed. So we got the van and it’s now parked next to our home.

Getting the two non-working motorcycles in there was interesting. We didn’t realize that the ramp could be raised a notch, so we had to run them up the ramp at speed and hope momentum would take us over the bump. Actually, Don tried to start Arnie, but he wasn’t playing. The enormous backfire almost burst my eardrum, and caused our neighbors to drop food everywhere. ;)

We got the big bookshelf out of the house with less difficulty than expected. Buying a 600# capacity hand cart last night was a good choice. We had to make another run to the office shop for more boxes. But I think that will be the last batch.

The kitchen is within a hair’s breadth of being done. Haven’t started the bathroom yet, but it’s tiny (the cats were corralled in there for a long while, much to their disgust). It would probably take me about half an hour to finish up my office, except for the desk, which I suspect will need to be at least partially dismantled.

Spent a couple of hours with the only other two residents still here. We had a barbecue with way too much food. It was a nice thing to do. I tried prickly pear for the first time and ended up with a spine stuck in my palate, just where it triggers the gag reflex. Guess what I did while trying to remove said spine? Luckily, this was before the barbecue.

My feet hurt.

By the bye, have you got that garden journal yet. I am starting to get concerned.
