[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]
Part Four, in which I go snarfing
05 February 2008
On our impromptu detour two days previously, I’d been very intrigued to glimpse San Andreas’ impossibly steep high street lined by old buildings.
We’d originally talked about going to Jackson, but given how much gas we’d burned by getting lost we though that was not such a good idea, and instead chose to go back to San Andreas. Don parked the rig in the street and I hiked down the hill to see the historic downtown area.
“Historic downtown” pretty much consisted of the one street, but it was jam-packed with old buildings and lovely to behold. As I passed the soon-to-close historical society (it was almost 4pm) a man came out and caught me taking pictures and grinning at the neat old buildings. He was pleased by this, being part of the museum volunteer staff, and gave me a potted history of what the buildings used to be and what they were used for now.
Much of the area was destroyed in a huge fire in the early 20th century, but San Andreas had escaped, in part because many of its buildings were stone.
He went on his way and I went on mine, spending a pleasant half-hour or so looking around.
By now we were tired, and after three days without internet looking to go home. We spent one night holed up in a parking lot, and arrived back in Lodi sometime in the early afternoon the next day. Being off the grid had helped us both to relax, and filled me with enough enthusiasm and energy to write some long-lost articles and get more work done.
We were so relaxed, in fact, that this will be our continued habit until such a time as we can go on the road full-time.
