32/48 Mountain View, California
Filed in Blogathon 2007On the 18th of July, 1996, I touched down in San Francisco with a big grin on my face and met Don for the first time. Eventually, we got married.
Our first home, and the place to which I went that day, was Mountain View.
From our one-bedroom apartment in a Silicon Valley complex, we could hear the trains arriving at the nearby single platform station. No trains stop there any more, but the sound of their horns is still soothing ot me, and reminds me of my first home in America.
The mountain view is of the Santa Cruz mountains, which offer wonderful riding–some of it quite technical. There is a small, vaguely historic downtown which features a great many restaurants, many of which can be enjoyed café-style on the outside. It was good. I wasn’t used to this much sunshine.
Silicon Valley pioneers Fairchild were here. So were some old adobes. The place used to be a stage stop, and is still home to Moffet Field. We went there once on an open day. I wrote it up for The Mining Company, which eventually became About.com–long after I left.
Mountain View isn’t an inherently fascinating place, though it has plenty of facilities and things to recommend it. Mostly, though, it was my first home here, and it was where I began to find my feet.

So, for your lists….
How about 7 (or any number of) places you’d LIKE to visit, but haven’t been yet. And why?
