I once got laughed at when I said that motorcycling was hard work. “That’s not exercise!” my roomie in the youth hostel scoffed.

“Oh no?” I countered. “Consider this: every time you stop at a light, stop sign or anything, there’s only my muscles (and certain laws of physics) holding up that 500 pound piece of metal. Every time I need to maneuver it, that’s my muscles doing so. The entire time you are riding, you are being toned from the vibration.” (I had wonderful arms and a firmer butt after my long trips.)

It pays to exercise and keep fit as a motorcyclist. I let my gym membership lapse when I knew we would be moving, and I can feel the difference. In this article, Lisa Haneberg of Go Moto: Northwest Motorcycling describes what she uses to keep fit, and the comments add more ideas.

Your friend has never rode a bike, or dropped one because she couldn’t keep it up. ;-)

I can imagine that it would be exercise.

Heh. My friends are smarter than that. It was just some random lass who was sharing the same hostel room and was clueless about bikes. ;)

I went bike-snarfing this afternoon. I’m now utterly pooped.

    Yup, it’s physical!

Oh yes, it’s definately physical! I did a track day last year and after spending a day hanging off the bike I was one sore fellow! Riding on the street isn’t quite as bad but after a long day in the saddle, I still have my share of aches and pains. For me, my hands are normally a little sore, especially after a multi-day trip.

Michael: I’ve never done a track day, but I can only imagine! I went landmark-hunting yesterday and even though it was only about 80 miles total I was *zonked* afterwards.

Oddly, Danny, I’ve made similar excuses myself. ;)

That’s a fun site you have there, btw. Thanks for visiting!
