11/48 Morecambe

Filed in Blog

At Lancaster, you’re expected to find alternative accommodation during your second year, as there isn’t enough on campus. Or at least back then, there wasn’t. Fortunately, seaside town Morecambe had plenty of vacation rentals that weren’t being used in term-time.

Therefore, for the first and only time ever, I got to live by the sea.

I shared the house with two girls and two boys. We had fun, but being wrapped up with my then boyfriend (future husband) I didn’t spend nearly enough time there.

Our house was over a shop. One day, the winds became so wild that the sheet glass blew in downstairs. We went out to the sea front to get battered by the winds and see the strong waves. Eventually, police came out and ordered everyone away–it was too dangerous. I loved the smell of the water and the storm.

I saw Daevid Allen perform in Morecambe. He was the leading force of a bizarre band called Gong. Some of you might have heard of it. He was 6′ tall, rake-thin and wore a jump suit covered in stars and moons. Brilliant.

Morecambe was tacky, touristy, and perfect. Whether it was our 8-hour long 7-course Christmas dinner, doing the Time Warp or stumbling around in the dark to add 50p coins to the electricity meter, my memories of living there are fond. I have wanted to live by the sea ever since.

You paid for power by vending machine?

    ;)

Not many people can get a seaside home here.

Oh how amazing that time sounds. You are so descriptive. It makes me remember that was one reason I enjoyed your book so much. Can’t wait for the next one. :-)

Buffra: Yes. Morecambe was actually sheltered by the Bay, but it was still definitely coastal.

Marina: Yup! And if we didn’t, blink, the lights would go off.

    Polli: :-)

Don’t know when I’ll do the next one. I’m actually working on it, but I can’t afford to put it out there even though I learned so much from the first one! I haven’t broken even on Little Twist yet. I’m considering putting out a free e-book for people to pass around.

I thought I’d have time to work on it today! LOL! Foolish mortal!
