Thinking Out Loud: It’s little orange season
Filed in Thinking Out LoudThis is the time of year when the little oranges come out to play. For a few bucks you can purchase an entire box of little sweet juicy oranges. Clementines, satsumas, whatever you prefer: they are seedless and sweet and yummy, and I gobble them like candy.
I’m really not a fruit person. I like veggies more. When I was a kid my parents would always stick a traditional apple and orange in my Christmas stocking and I’d have a childish moment of disappointment before persuading my brother to eat them instead. ;) But there is something about those little golden things…see, I’m eating one now. :: all gone ::
Yum.
Little oranges mark the start of the holiday season for me, though they never used to be available in bulk like this way back when. Nowadays, they come in just before Thanksgiving and provide the ideal antidote to endless piles of chocolate. I can usually get through a five pound box and that will do it for the season. ;)
Would it be a surprise if I said that one of my favorite holiday candies is the chocolate orange? There were even chocolate lemons, one year. They’re good to share and remind me of sitting on the sofa at home, munching en famille. Now, I rarely get one because when all’s said and done it’s just the two of us; Don doesn’t eat much chocolate and I can eat all too much.
Where am I going with this? Oh, nowhere, really. Just reminiscing…and going round in little orange circles. ;)

I was just thinking the other day that someone used to send us a huge box of navel oranges and grapefruits every December when I was growing up. I assume it was someone we knew when we lived in Florida before moving to New Orleans. It seems that every December I look forward to fresh navel oranges and grapefruits but they never seem to be the same quality as those that came in that box.
I thought about trying to find a place in Florida to order a box from, but I think the box would go bad being it’s just me now.
I’m kind of glad there’s someone else who thinks of citrus this time of year though. :)

I like mandarins the best. My parents have an orange tree growing in their front yard. The fruit begins to ripen by Christmas, though it really reaches it’s peak in January. So, yes, I think of citrus fruit being a winter thing too.

Lynne: I think there’s a whole generation of us :)
I don’t like oranges because of the pith, but the little ones seem to be soft enough not to have that problem.
It must be good to have relatives in Florida :)

Mmm, those too. I knew there was another kind that I’d missed off, but I couldn’t recall them *grin*
