June 19 - Highway 50

Filed in Nevada 2006

I had surprisingly little traffic to deal with. Highway 50 was neat, though the summit part above Stateline felt a little hairy–I didn’t like being that close to a cliff edge, and I’m not sure about coming up that way.

I crossed into Nevada at Stateline, where Don and I got married some years ago. It has the most boring state line ever, a little green sign across the street. Half the town is in California and half in Nevada. The first casino is less than half a block away.

I didn’t find/see a hotel that suited me, so I carried on. I missed my first snarf–it was on the opposite side of the road–and this seemed to trigger some kind of “switch” in me; I realised that if I did try to get *all* the state markers I would swiftly go nuts and stop enjoying myself. So, I have revised my plan to “ride around Nevada and find historical markers” without much of a quantitative goal. I’m sure I’ll find lots.

Spooner Summit was nice and I did find my first marker up there, swiftly followed by a Clamper wildcard. There was a sign saying “state historical marker ahead” but I saw no state historical marker.

I was quite tired when I made it to Carson City, and as previously noted rather cross/disappointed that I didn’t spot the “free wireless” sign until after I’d gone to Motel 6.

Photos: me at the snarf; the view from the second snarf; gee, I guess we know where the prevailing wind is…
