It was just a little thing

Filed in Motorcycle Maintenance

I am a bad, bad bike mama.

I last changed my brake pads late last year. I forget when, exactly. I wasn’t expecting they’d need replacing anytime soon so I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should.

There’s an object lesson here in checking even though you think it isn’t time yet.

With Don’s help, I removed the rear calipers, and took out the pads to inspect them. They were metal on metal. Ugh. No wonder there was that odd, swishing sound the last few days.

We figured out that the piston had at some point in the past been so extended that it couldn’t retract. This left the rear brake on all the time. As to why it did that, we couldn’t hazard a guess. But the net result was a pair of embarrassingly nasty-looking brake pads. Fie on me!

Plinked in the new pads, reassembled the many fiddly little bits, and bob’s your uncle. The rear brake works.

Shame it’s been blowing a hooley and throwing it down with rain all day.
