Mini-interview

Filed in Blog

I was given some questions to answer by Around the Island. And now, they get answered. :)

1. When you were a young child what did you want to be when you grew up? How close/far from that are you today?

– From the age of six, when I was up in front of the entire school getting a prize for my story about the witch in the wood who went around healing hedgehogs and other sick critters, I have wanted to be a writer. I dallied with being an astronaut until I realized that you had to be good at math and science.

At first I thought I was going to be a Great Novelist. I started writing a fantasy novel at fourteen and finally vanity-published it in the year 2000, but even though it’s the first of the series I have realized that I just don’t want to write the others, much to the chagrin of my approximately ten fans. ;)

In my thirties I realized that I was going to be a travel writer, but I still write novels for fun (namely NaNoWriMo).

I finally gave myself permission to call myself a writer last year, with the publication of A Little Twist of Texas. If I ever sell enough copies to break even on the investment, I’ll publish another one. :-P

I suddenly realized that being a writer was not the same as being paid to be a writer, so I decided I was a writer and that was that. I’d waited thirty years to call myself a writer and I’d been one all along. Once I accepted my inherent writerliness, the money started to follow…I’ve done my first two freelance articles this year, and am making money from writing in unexpected ways too. There is a possibility that I’ll branch out into corporate writing–brochures, newsletters, that kind of thing.

The more I write, the more ideas I get. Hence, my blog addiction. ;)

2. If you suddenly discovered a lamp with an actual genie in it, what would your three wishes be and why?

Hmm.

I would wish for a do-over on certain choices and events. No, I’m not going to blog about what those might be. ;)

I would wish empathy and understanding on everyone. That would probably stop all wars because a lot of people’s heads would explode.

I would also wish for the ability/character (lack of shyness) to sell things without annoying people or being afraid, i.e. this would mean selling my stock of books, making reprints, and having enough to publish another book.

3. What is the furthest from home you’ve ever been?

That’s really hard to answer, because I have two homes. Here in California, I’m the furthest from my UK home that I’ve ever been. In the UK, I’m the furthest from my California home that I’ve ever been.

When I was living in England the furthest non-home place I went to was Idrija, Slovenia, which is still home because it’s where my aunt, cousins and an extended web of family live. The furthest I ever went on my motorcycle was Cornwall, when I was based in Hertfordshire (about 30 miles north of London). 400 miles each way, plus detours.

While I have been living in California the furthest non-home place I went to was Charleston, South Carolina. The furthest I ever went on my motorcycle was El Paso, Texas, but I clocked more miles just touring around Nevada.

4. What is your favorite comfort food? Do you have a recipe to share?

– No recipes. I tend to reach for a bag of Snapeas, because I like the salt and crunch. I’m also into chocolate. The act of cooking is comforting, and I don’t do it enough. But I tend to cook stuff like pasta sauce and chilli and curry, in bulk, and freeze it, rather than anything else.

I used to make great shortbread, cookies, etc. but all my recipes are in storage and the flour here is different so they don’t work as well. I just found self-rising flour so that might make it worth trying again. I should probably try to find my rolling pin in the storage shed.

Great answers Linda, thanks for playing along. I think that feeling that absolutely anything is possible is what is so magical about childhood. I remember wanting desperately to be an Olympic gymnast (that was the year Nadia Comaneci got all those perfect 10’s) and being completely crushed when I realized that my utter inability to do a backwards somersault would be my downfall.

And for everyone to be able to empathize and understand each other - what a wonderful world that would truly be.

Robin: I think a bunch of people’s heads really would explode, though, like the aliens in “Mars Attacks!” if you ever saw that.

Yeah, I could never do gymnastics either. I was born clumsy…but that’s okay. I still enjoy graceful sports…as a spectactor. :)
