A little fantasy

From the picture, you can’t really see the intricacy of the painting on this figurine, which is less than an inch tall. A long time ago a friend questioned me about how I saw myself–and what the fantasy characters that I played in Dungeons and Dragons looked like. I invariably played elves, and magic-users; they wore long purple robes and had long, flowing hair.
What I didn’t know was that she and her boyfriend were scheming on my behalf. The boyfriend did some hunting around and found just the right figurine, and painted her in the colors and fashion that I described. It was a wonderful, personalized gift.
I came across the figurine when I hauled my credenza off into storage. It had been tucked there for eight years, out of sight. Now, it’s tucked inside a box, out of sight, for who knows how long. Such things do not belong within the sight of cats.
I’ve lost touch with that friend. I wish I hadn’t, but that’s sometimes how it is. I don’t know how to explain why we lost touch and therefore I’m not sure how to mend that particular bridge. There was no falling-out, just a drifting apart, of choosing different paths in life. But at least finding the figurine reminded me, and made me wonder how she was doing, and I hope that she and her now husband and their son are well.
