The crazy cat lady

Filed in Blog

ZorroI have three indoor cats.

One day, maybe four years ago (I think it was around the time I was dismantling my Virago), another cat started showing up. I’m assuming he’s male, as he’s never gotten any fatter, though he did once disappear for months on end. He’s an attractive little thing, and one day he told me that his name was Zorro. He has this white “z” down one leg, and I suppose that’s what triggered the naming.

SpeedyAbout four months ago, our neighbor “left” precipitously, and the Siamese cat managed to avoid being caught and taken to the pound. Several of the neighbors immediately began feeding her, and eventually she got to trusting me. At first, she was very antisocial and growly, but one day I picked her up to see what would happen. I retained all my skin, and she started purring. Speedy joined the herd.

TabbyNow, I notice the word is getting around. There’s a beaten-up tabby cat who sits on my doorstep. He is one of those cats who has a permanent pissed-off expression and that you know won’t be friendly, no matter what, but he’d still like the free lunch. Speedy has a buddy, the same black cat that followed me the other night, and sometimes I see that one, too.

These pictures give a fairly typical indication of what awaits me when I first open the door each morning.

At the tender age of thirty-seven, I’ve tbecome a crazy cat lady.

I consider myself lucky that only one has managed to find its way here. Not looking forward to further development in the “neighborhood,” that’s for sure.

My grandmother was a crazy cat lady too. You would have liked her. She probably would have asked for a ride on your bike. When she was younger she went barn storming with a friend who owned an ex-WWI biplane. Of course in those days it was still just “the great war.” :)

Marina: Stop feeding them…the word gets around. ;)

I think I’m seeing so many now because the neighbourhood has been vanishing so there are fewer humans to feed the mouths.

PR: Sounds like a great lady. She would probably have wanted to ride her own. :)
