Attend a photography exhibit

During the blogathon, I was lamenting the fact that about two dozen events that I wanted to attend were happening that same weekend. One of the things I was regretting was that I’d forgotten to attend the opening event of Joe Decker’s photography exhibition of his travels in Greenland, and that I’d likely be much too tired to attend its last day which was the day after the blogathon itself.

As it turned out, I woke up with a little energy to spare, and decided to go anyway, arriving about an hour before break-down. I didn’t regret it. Joe was sitting there in the gallery, and told me that the opening had been chock-full of people with no time to say more than hello. A few more people wandered in; two had just spent several months living in Argentina and their friend had been a guide at one of Alaska’s national parks–it may have been Denali, but I forget. So we all wandered around this collection of superb, bright, stunning photographs together, with Joe as tour guide and others adding information. In some pictures, texture dominated the scene; in others, the scale of the ice country was shown in its full enormity. Blue icebergs glimmered and a polar bear stalked.

Photography exhibits can take you to places never before imagined. To have the photographer there is better still, adding a whole new dimension to the sights. There’s a good chance I will never go to Greenland—but at least I got to see it through somebody else’s eyes.

Suggestion: You should be able to find out when exhibits are by looking at the events pages of your local newspaper, by checking out local galleries or art centers, or just by doing a search online. Pick a theme that you’d enjoy, and go. If you can talk to the photographer, better still.
