In-Flight

The flight is halfway over already. There are times in this life when I want to really, really slap myself around. I stood up early to make sure I got a good seat, then I plonked myself down over the wing/engine. I had other options, but this sheep quality in me said “no, settle in where you can get”. Duhhhh.

That notwithstanding, I’m absolutely loving using this laptop in odd places (well for me anyway), and I still get a good view of mechanical stuff and beautiful scenery. A little while ago we flew over what was probably Redding and Shasta – at least the things looked like volcanoes and there was a big wiggledy lake that I remember Shasta being like. Lots of blue watery fingers creeping into the mountains.

One of them, with snow on, was probably Mount Shasta. Or I could be totally wrong and it could be Lassen. I really am guessing.

A cloud went by that looked like a surfboard. It was long, thin, and had a little hanging down bit like a fin.

I got a real kick out of coming up the Bay Area. I was sort of like this: “Oh! Dumbarton Bridge! It looks nifty from up here, almost as nifty as when I rode over it in January.” And then the Golden Gate, and the Richmond Bridge, and all that good stuff. And San Francisco at the end of the Oakland Bay bridge, something I haven’t ridden yet but want to because the view as you come across to SF is magnificent. It’s kind of exciting. Home from a different angle! And I actually recognise stuff!

Whee.

I’m feeling really at home. After seven years I guess I should. But I get a kick out of WOW look at that smoke! I’m flying over the forest fires…yikes! … knowing the area a bit better, and remembering how fun it was to arrive the first time, in 1996 for my visit. And it’s sort of funny how quickly you get out of Silicon Valley, with its bushel of buildings that look like silicon chips from the air, a giant circuit board of industry, up into things that look suspiciously like the wilds. I guess I’m at peace with my home.

I never saw forest fires before. I hope everyone down there is doing okay, but they probably aren’t.

Looking west towards Marin, I felt a pang of sadness to have not been able to ride, when I saw the pretty curvy coastline that would have been my route. But at least I saw the Pacific. Arnie may now be in working condition so at least I can get to my writing class next week, do errands, etc. Feel less like a shut-in, that kind of thing.

I’m going to stow this away now. I suppose they will start telling us that the descent is going to be happening soon. And it is a bit slow – it’s only a P266. I might be shooting myself in the foot because a) I left my floppy drive on the kitchen table and b) so far I have not tried using this with dialup. We didn’t get around to getting wireless working, so I might end up having to type this all over again. Ptui.

I’m thinking of trying Bluepoof’s company’s new hiptop when it comes out this Autumn. I would like a thingie that allows me to post little things as they occur, then use the laptop for more lengthy wafflings. My battery is at 78%. Well, my laptop’s, anyway. I am not battery operated. Last I checked.

[brief addendum: made it home after productive snarfari, am well fed and snuggled by cats, and know where the tea is ;-)]
