You comment, I reply
Filed in Blog
I’ve recently begun following Ordinary Folk, the blog of a cartoonist and inadvertent internet-schmoozer. Go look and see what I mean. On this site, I found the I Reply movement.
The gist is that the blogosphere is one great big conversation. If people take the trouble to reply on your blog, you should take the time to respond, even if it’s only to say “Cool!” If you do, that makes things two-way. It’s the basic tenet of customer service–and of friendship. Seriously: what use is a blog without a community of readers? I would not have made it through Blogathon without a little help from my friends. :)
So, this is my commitment: I will respond to all comments posted on Raven’s Roads, as soon as I can. I have just set up a daily reminder which emails me to tell me to do this. (Gotta love those geeky moments.) On the 3rd of August it will tell me that I should answer comments from the 2nd. If I miss doing that, then I will still have the reminder in my to-do folder, reminding me to go back. Therefore, forgetting is not an option. The reminders will nag me until I do what I’m supposed to.
I will do my best. Sometimes something happens that leaves me behind. I know myself well enough to say that. But I will get back to you.

Ah ha ha. You say that now, but when you have hundreds or thousands of comments a day, your view will change! ::insert evil laughter here::
No, seriously, it’s a good idea, and I like hearing back from you. :) Kudos to you for doing it!

Except that your replies to my comments — can I know that they happen?? Or do I have to keep checking??

beautyredefined Oh, that I should have such problems. :) Of course, by then I can afford to answer comments all day, so that’ll be okay. :-P
Buffra: Right now you have to keep checking. I have been trying (in vain) to install a notifier where it sends you a quick “I answered” email. Failing that, I’ll probably put in a “read followup comments” thing which isn’t as good because then you get *all* the comments and not just your own.

Sometimes I email directly a commenter, sometimes I just comment back in my blog, sometimes I write a whole new post about a comment I’ve received and sometimes I don’t respond. I have a few die-hard readers who comment on just about everything I post and its hard to keep up with them especially since I’m doing everything by hand. LOL.

I’ve finally figured out how to use my reply-to-commenter tool. I’ll probably consolidate more general comments into one and then respond/notify to the other ones where some dialogue is needed with that tool. I should imagine it will be some while before I need to worry about too many comments. ;)

Buffra–I managed to figure out how to use the reply/notify tool. So unless it’s just a general nod of approval type comment you’ll get a notification…a bit like this :)

I saw that tip on the Blogging Tips meme, but I know some bloggers who get dozens if not hundreds of comments each day (Like Smart Bitches or how Ms. Snark used to). Well, I guess I’ll cross that bridge later! One could only hope for such a following.
I’ve noticed at the end of some blogs there’s a box to CHECK if you want to be notified of response. I want to know how to get that gadget. Maybe it’s not possible on blogspot.

Indeed! Yes, like you say, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. :-P
I don’t know too much about Blogspot…but it’s probably an option somewhere. I know that with this software (Wordpress) there are so many plugins and extras that you could make a career out of trying them all. ;)
