Hat Creek Campground can be found on California State Highway 44, in the Lassen National Forest. It is a short distance east of a vista point with a short nature trail, and near the settlement of Old Station.
There are a few other campgrounds in the area, but this one is paved and more developed with roads that do not bounce everything out of your closets. In June 2009, the cost was $16 a night, no hookups.
The campground is rather large, with 75 spaces, most first-come first-served, and some accessible. The setting is wooded and pretty, at a shade under 4,400 feet. Some loops are more open than others if you happen to need to aim a satellite. Each space has a grill, picnic table and fire pit.
Sometimes, the picnic tables migrate. ;)
There is also the creek for which the campground is named:
Perhaps the Brits who read this blog will find this as amusing as I did. Poor notice board!
There are toilets, water spigots, but no hookups. We filled up our tanks in the middle of a spectacular thunderstorm that was right overhead…the cats became rather small! ;)
I gather from the website that there is also a dump station, but we didn’t know it was there at the time and completely failed to notice it.
Hat Creek Campground was a lovely place to stay, with the added benefit of a very interesting volcanic geology trail just across the road.
