This is where biker chick Raven was born.

I met N., my first real boyfriend, at a ham radio rally in Pudsey (another Leeds postcode). He rode bikes. Below is a picture of the first bike I ever rode. Gawd, I was thin back then. And I had a dubious 80s perm

Halifax, West Yorkshire is on the edge of Brontë country, on the edge of the Calderdale moors. It’s a wonderful old town with a great deal of history and culture and some excellent bike roads that I’ve never partaken of as a rider. The moors feel the same way to me as the desert–they give a sensation of space, or loneliness and time to think and “be.”

N. taught me to ride on private roads and in car parks. The bike is a Honda CD200 and I don’t think you can get them in America.

That’s where I had my first ride. Oh boy. I loved, loved, loved it. He was being cautious and I was going, “Go faster! Go faster!” I was a natural.

Amusingly, when Don and I first contemplated meeting, we talked about halfway and caculated (yes, we are geeks) that the nearest place would be Halifax, Nova Scotia. Then I decided that I wanted to see California, so that’s what I did instead.

Because I’m still a Yorkshire lass, more often than not it’s ‘Allifax. ;)

I love that photo! You look so natural on a bike. I still haven’t gotten brave enough to sit on one, but when I do one day, you’ll be the first to hear about it. :-)

    Marina–I certainly used to be!

Polli–if you meet me, you’ll be sitting on a bike. :-P

And yes, I really have felt comfortable on them from the first moment I sat on one.
