Motorcycle tail light kludge

After the unfortunate incident last Saturday, my motorcycle was left illegal without a tail light (no brake light, no licence plate light). This would not do.

Don assembled the items needed:

  • Electrical tape
  • Leatherman tool
  • Styrofoam block
  • Scotch tape

  • Tail light from the mobile home
  • Soldering iron
  • Tie wraps

and proceeded to create something that, although not aesthetically pleasing, is legal.

Tail light from a mobile home

My job was to remove the seat and discover which of the connectors no longer had anything connected to it. From this he was able to figure out which wire did the brake light (it makes things shine more brightly) and which was the tail light. He soldered the wires from the mobile home tail light to the ripped-out remnants of the original wiring and taped them. He stuck the light in the styrofoam block and coated it in tape so it wouldn’t look quite so horrible. Then he affixed this block to my cargo rack using tie wraps. A carefully-cut hole in the light itself allows white light to seep downwards to the licence plate.

It looks as though there’s a dalek’s eye stuck to the back of my bike, but hey. It works.

The end result--a fixed motorcycle tail light

Heh, clever, and I do find it aesthetically pleasing. And I hate spelling the word aesthetically.

*grin* You like it? It makes me giggle every time I see it. I have a real rat bike now. ;)
