February End-of-Month Putt
Filed in Days Out26 February 2007
The weekend before last I joined several of my friends from the Wind Dancers for the End-of-Month Putt. It was something of a blustery day, a bit cold, with rain expected, so Kathleen suggested a straight run down to San Juan Bautista for lunch. We had coffee and chat first, and watched the strange alien beings disguised as teenagers with balloons on their head. They were having some kind of a birthday celebration that involved rituatl balloon humiliation.
Leslie and Bonnie, who were not riding along, left and the rest of us–Genia, Kathleen, Jodie, Laura and I–got onto the freeway. It was a nice, straightforward ride with the wind in our hair.
Down in San Juan Bautista, which is a lovely old mission town with a peaceful feeling, we picked a restaurant where we could sit outside. The entire rear area is a big garden which features many kinds of cacti, mature trees, and other plants. It’s definitely spring, with daffodils and crocuses blooming. We took the tour of the garden and were honked at by the guard goose. Somewhere out of sight a flock of chickens was haivng a clucking panic attack. Maniacal critters!
Lunch was okay…I had a quesadilla, but it was a bit runny. The service was not so good, though the head waiter was apologetic. By this I mean that three meals arrived and then, considerably later, two more. Jodie treated with guacamole dip. The company was the main thing.

Afterwards, we headed back, but I peeled off at Gilroy. I enjoyed a nice scenic ride home with just a few light sprinkles of rain that were not bothersome. I rode up Watsonville Road and then Uvas. There still isn’t that much water in the reservoir and it’s interesting to see the “workings” of the dam exposed to the air, but sad for the wildlife. A little stretch of curvacious, green countryside was very good for the soul and I arrived home in a great mood, about twenty minutes before the skies really opened.
