Thursday Thirteen #7: 13 Things I’d barely thought about two weeks ago

Filed in Blog

I blame the Blogathon for plunging me head-first into the flow of the blogosphere. ;) The last two weeks have been an awesome learning experience and quite revealing. There is so much out there!

Thirteen Things about YOUR NAME

  1. Technorati tags: I had to ask a friend to explain about Technorati because I didn’t understand what they did/what they were for. Now, I have plugins that allegedly do all that stuff automagically.

  2. Schmoozing (at least in this context) and, specifically the Power of Schmooze Awards. Who’d have thunk that one could schmooze online?

  3. Blog Carnivals. Related content spread over dozens of websites. What a concept.

  4. Bloglines. A place to read your feeds.

  5. Automated blogrolls, like at Blogrolling.com. Suitably inspired, I started two motorcycle blogrolls yesterday.

  6. Paid reviews. I was aware of pay-per-post and wasn’t too keen on the idea, but paid reviews seems more legit. Not that it matters as my site doesn’t have enough traffic for it, yet.

  7. John Chow and John Cow. What a funny guy John Chow is. And what a funny send-up John Cow is. And both sites are quite revealing and informative, too.

  8. The concept of Link Love. As far as I can tell, these are posts where you share good sites with the world.

  9. The blogosphere. I never talked about the blogosphere before.

  10. My Blog Log. Build your own online community. As far as I understand it, it’s a blog reading service where you can build up a public community of readers.

  11. FeedBurner. An aggregator of feeds which does certain tricks that your standard run-of-the-mill feed can’t, such as telling you how many readers you don’t have.

  12. Full feeds vs. partial feeds. When I was sending out full feeds, the Google alerts for my site were sending me to A Certain Big Site, where my feed is syndicated. I didn’t like that, so I went to partial feeds. But I hear that this is a Bad Thing, so I’m trying to figure out what to do about it.

  13. Wordless Wednesday.

Well, you look like you are on your way. Don’t forget Alexa and pagerank. Got to know that stuff too. Also need to know how much your blog is worth. Don’t worry about all that stuff. Doing memes helps your blog traffic. Have a great TT. :)

Great list! I have been blogging for over a year and I still have no idea what Technorati actually does; I just add names to the tag field becuase my wife tells me it’s a good thing to do. I don’t know what trackbacks are or how you feed things. I just enjoy blundering round in blogland while the intelligent people make use of all the fancy stuff.

Hmmm, some of those I don’t know about and I’ve been blogging 3 years or so. You learn something new every day on the internets.

    I love Bloglines!

Nice list. I had heard of John Chow and John Cow but never went to visit until I saw them here. Very funny stuff on that John Cow!

BTW, go with full feeds, I personally hate partial feeds and often unsubscribe when I see them in my bloglines.

I’ve been blogging for three years, but the blog referenced here is only three months old and as my colleague keeps telling me, learning to work the blogosphere has a big learning curve. We really put thought into using these tools and so far it seems to be paying off…so keep up the good work.

I have heard of & use most of these. I don’t like the hassle of some Blogosphere tools though. I have a decent audience on my blog but would like a bigger audience. :-)

Informative! Some of these I knew about 2 weeks ago…but some of these I didn’t know about 10 minutes ago. :)

I have been blogging on and off for about 7 years now, but I still don’t know anything about half of these things.
But then again, I never really considered myself as part of the blogosphere, so I figure I didn’t miss out on much so far. ;o)

Chelle — no kidding! I’ve been online for a long time, but this wider network is something I’m only just starting to get into.

    Hi Joely! No kidding!

I have actually been online for many, many years and blogging for a few, but through LiveJournal. It’s only very recently that I started venturing into the “outside” world of blogging. I like.

    Mind-numbingboggling, isn’t it?

My 13 is actually over on the farm blog (gotta get the book one typed, probably after I get Anthony down for a nap) for now:

Susan G: I’d been planning to add you to my feed reader for a while, and just did. While I’ve had an online presence for a very long time (since 1996!) , it’s only recently that I started wetting my feet in life-outside-LiveJournal blogging.

    Hi Polli :)

It certainly looks that way. ;)

Btw, I signed up for my own gravatar, but it doesn’t seem to be working…is there anything you had to do to get yours working, or did it just eventually clue itself in?

Burntofferings: Neat! I’ll come take a look now.

It’s been quite a learning curve the last week or so.

    Suprina: me too :)

ComedyPlus: I’ve actually been blogging at LJ for a few years, and have had a web presence since 1996. But I started my WP blog back in, oh, January–it seemed like a logical next step. Then I was only skimming the surface, but since the Blogathon I really seemed to have been drawn in and I’m loving every minute!

    Nicholas: thanks.

I think typepad already has its own feed, and you can probably put up buttons to advertise it. I wouldn’t know how to do it myself (though I believe that FeedBurner is a service that does that for you.)

Technorati is a sort of blog catalog/popular contest. The tags filter you into searches. So let’s say you tag a post “food”–if someone searches for food your post should appear there.

Trackbacks work like this: if someone blogs about you and mention your link, either your home page or a specific post, they can (but don’t always) send a trackback. It appears like a comment, and basically assures the world that people are talking about you. It can be a nice way to check your traffic.

Lori: Yes, I have fun with Technorati too. Got a long way to go though. ;)

    Thanks for visiting!

Angela: You’re right about the full feeds. I’ve since figured out how to be able to shorten the stuff on my home page while still having a full feed, so I’m pleased with that end result.

    Thanks for visiting :)

    Thanks, Star. :)

Damozel: no kidding, but I think that if you do put the effort in it really can work out :)

I think that as you work your way through you pick out the tools that work best for you. At least, one hopes so ;)
