On the way to Calistoga
Filed in Day Trips, RVingLast weekend Don and I took a little road trip up to Calistoga and environs. I left the bike at home, and this was therefore my first time traveling in the RV since we did the test ride over three weeks ago. (I missed my Beastie, but I’m glad I did: the battery died, and it rained almost without letting up from Friday night until Sunday morning.)
What I noticed the most about traveling in an RV was how much higher up I was than on a motorcycle. On a bike, the experience is much more active: you are part of the landscape. In an RV, I was definitely in passive mode, and a constant TV show of cool images swung by through the window.
The wine country is gorgeous. I saw mile after mile of greenery with roses planted at the head of vine rows and gentle hills sweeping up into a blue sky. I’ve only really been up here in passing before, so the journey had the fresh feel of new territory and was therefore exciting and full of comments such as “Ooh!” ;)
We even used the RV to go snarfing, but it pretty much confirmed what I already knew: driving a 26′ vehicle down city streets, contributing to the denuding of poor defenceless trees, is not a relaxing way to look for landmarks. It’s a good job it’s Fall. ;)
Here are some of the neat things I saw out of the window. :)
The grape crusher statue is iconic of the area and is visible in the hillside above Napa. It marks the start of the Napa Valley.

Vines.

Antenna dishes just outside Napa. A mini Jodrell Bank, perhaps?

“Trevigne”–perhaps a pun, as it has a très grand number of vignes. ;) Either way, a pretty little building somewhere in the St. Helena vicinity.

Love your photographs. We mostly go around Santa Rosa so these are all new sites to me. :D

You just made me homesick……The statue of the grape crusher guy is one that I have seen many times in my life. We always drove from the Bay Area to the Napa valley alot. My mother grew up in Calistoga in the 1930s. Isn’t it a lovely place?

Becky: it’s wonderful. I am really looking forward to going back, but this time with a bike to get all the little hidden-away places. :)
