RSS 43/48 Ditaya
Filed in Blogathon 2007Ditaya is 15 now. She lives in a refugee camp in Zambia. I believe that she’s originally from Congo.
Life in the refugee camp sucks. Twice they’ve had people steal everything, which isn’t much, that they own–even their clothes. The programs there revolve around getting these people back to normal, keeping the kids in school, and letting the kids be kids instead of adults with the cares of the world.
In some of the African countries, CCF rehabilitates child soldiers. That’s the kind of thing they are up against here.
I’ve yet to receive a letter directly from Ditaya. I don’t know why, because she’s certainly capable, and is doing well in school. Her extended family is arond her–parents, aunts, cousins, siblings. Someone writes a letter, either in English or French.
This is the hardest sponsorship for me. I know that it will be a long time, if ever, before they have a “real” life. Their life is really on hold. It almost seems as though there is no hope. But then, they have been taken out of a war zone into relative safety, and they are alive. The rest, I hope, will come in time.

I hope so, too. I can’t even begin to imagine going through something like that. We are so blessed here. I’m glad she’s with family.
