A distant snow-capped mountain

This mountain was visible for miles around. At a guess I’d say it was probably Mt. Lassen, but I wouldn’t stake my life on that. Don and I wandered across the road to see what we could find, and this was part of it. ;)

Hmmm. It’s kinda hard to tell because the mountain’s tucked somewhat behind the tree. And judging by the fact the shadows are relatively long, it has to be near dawn or dusk, which means it’s entirely possible that’s Shasta, not Lassen. (Yeah, you can see Shasta from Corning if the weather’s right…it’s one of my signs that I’m getting close to home, because Shasta’s directly in front of you coming up the freeway.)

Yeah, looking at it again, I’m pretty sure that’s Shasta. (And pulling out Google Maps seems to suggest that there is no way you could have gotten Lassen and the sandbar in the same shot.)

I’d have to see a bigger shot to really be sure, though.

I have photos taken at Redding from in February and my shots of Lassen match the over all outline of your mountains.

Huh. That still doesn’t look like Lassen to me, and it doesn’t seem to match right when I try to line up the beach, the sandbar, and Lassen in Google Earth. I get much closer when I try to match the setting to Shasta.

But it could be Lassen and I’m using the wrong sandbar to triangulate with.

(I’m from Redding. The lines of the mountains are slightly different from Corning, which is why I’m not matching it well in my head and may need to see a bigger picture.)

gee, at least the snow is in the distance, its right outside our window as we speak ! no fun out here, thats for sure :(

Yeah, a few more would be helpful.

Either way, I grew up with both Shasta and Lassen on my horizons. It’s nice to see them pop up in pictures.

(I like Sacramento, but I miss having mountains on the horizon.)

Beautiful scenery! I love how the mountains are barely in the background… if you didn’t look closely enough in the picture, you’d miss ‘em. I live for serendipities on the road. Thanks for sharing!
