Say cheese
Filed in Blog, PhotographyI think the single most important tool I have as a blogger, apart from my computer, is my digital camera. I couldn’t care less about iPods, Playstations, smart phones and all the rest of it: if I could pick one single electronic item, no holds barred, for Christmas, it would be a new digital camera. I love being able to show you where I’ve gone; if I don’t have enough words to spare, I can just make a photo essay. Cropping the photos has become a pleasant evening task: something with which I can wind down. I think my blog would be two-dimensional without them, and of course they come in handy for the magazine articles too. ;)
The one I have, a Canon S70, is brilliant. It is solid enough to survive thousands of miles of motorcycling, and small enough to fit in my waist pack. I never liked its successor, the S80, because it felt a lot more flimsy. The S70 has a three times optical zoom and 7.1 megapixels. Upgrading, I would be looking for more of a zoom.
I’ve messed with digital SLRs and to be honest, even though they feel “right” in my hands, I would find it difficult to be spontaneous with such a machine. If I left it in auto mode, what would be the point of all that control? I also don’t really like the “in-between” cameras. There’s got to be a real term for them, but it’s the cameras that are one step up from point and shoots like mine and one step down from the SLRs. I find them too plasticky and they don’t fit well in my small hands.
I have my eyes on two cameras. This is one of them. The other is a Canon Powershot Pro S5 which has 8 megapixels but the all-important 12x zoom. I would want to handle both physically to see how they fit before making any decisions.
But you know, I don’t have the funds for this Christmas. My old camera is wearing out–the zoom switch is going, and after 14,000 photographs I really don’t blame it–but by the time I have any disposable income again Canon will probably have brought out their next year’s range and this lot will be 25% cheaper.

The Canon Powershot S3 is a better deal. From the reviews I read, most of the Canon users said the S5 wasn’t worth the extra cost. I love my S3 and there are some really nice lens accessories you can buy separately like a telephoto lens, which I’m hinting for Santa to bring me. :P

I agree with you on the importance of the digital camera to blogging! Blogging became fun again for me when I got my new camera 18 months ago. It’s also given my son and me one more way of bonding. He has such a wonderful eye for photography!

Lynne: alas, that wouldn’t do for me: it’s 6 MP, and I’d want to stay at 7 or more. It makes a great deal of difference to me to be able to crop out stuff that doesn’t work.
It’s kinda moot, though. I can’t afford it and figure that by the time I can the prices will come down. ;)

Pussreboots: I still remember how fun my first camera was. I think I have the first roll of film I ever took kicking around somewhere…
