The other Corps of Engineers campground
Filed in BlogThere was much awesomeness on the way to the other Corps of Engineers campground. We saw a bald eagle: my first one ever. The previous night we saw a great horned owl–again, my first one ever. And we discovered that the raggedy messy nest on top of a power pole we’d seen earlier was none other than an osprey’s nest. :)
I have very fond memories of seeing the ospreys at Boat of Garten in Scotland, and it’s a rare treat to see one in the wild.
We cut through very empty land–farms and rolling hills and just a whole great deal of prettiness. The campground, when we got there, was great fun: a set of rollercoaster roads that seemed just barely acceptable for an RV of our size. I held onto the side a lot. ;)
We eventually settled on one right beside the lake with its own little deck jutting out over the side. From there we saw hundreds of wild birds–anything from sparrows to water fowl to the gorgeous woodpecker that even came and clung to the wooden siding of our space and was busy all day drilling a perfectly round hole.
We didn’t do much of anything other than enjoy the view; I started dinner and then Don started a fire and we had fun for several hours, listening to the short wave radio and the ribbiting frogs and trying, with eventual success, to set fire to the massive log that someone had donated to the campsite. Meanwhile little fires sprung up in the woods as campers pretended to be cavemen and we were glad not to be the guys two spaces on, trying to back their trailer into a steeply angled space.
