On the 5th of March Don and I headed off to Brannan Island State Park for our monthly jaunt into the country. For my part, it was a sanity-saving exercise, an opportunity to unhook and unwind.
I wasn’t in the mood for anything intellectual while I was there; I just needed to relax and detoxify from the unexpected intensity of life behind a keyboard. And it’s because of this that rather than try to find words to write you a travel essay, instead I’ll do a series of simple photo essays for a change.
Mostly what I did out there was walk. I went on several different walks and brought my camera along. This was the first walk, which I took on 6th March in the early-ish morning, when the dew was fresh on the grass and everything smelled earthy and warm.
In the distance I spotted what I thought might be an interpretive sign, so I headed down to see what was what.

It wasn’t a sign at all: it was a very overgrown mini-amphitheatre, charming in the way the grass grew thickly between the benches. I guess they must have programs and chautauquas in the summer.

The campground is dotted with mature trees. This one, with its thick, twisted trunk, was particularly appealing.

I don’t know what kind of tree this is, but it was “our” campground tree and stood next to a narrow track down to “our” personal stretch of beach.

Down by the water, this fallen tree framed the picture quite prettily. Mostly it was silent, but from time to time a boat would barrel on by and a few moments later the build-up of wake would slap against the shore in ever more powerful waves.

The rocky shore there reminded me a lot of Loch Ness near Urquhart Castle. No castle here, though.

I sat on the rock at the centre for a while, getting centered and contemplating the nature of the universe, which was sunny.

Sorry ’bout that. I was away for three/four days, then after the road trip it was full-time into preparations for a talk that was given last Tuesday, and then I had burnout, and had a birthday, and am now slowly catching up.
I answer all my comments, just not usually as slowly as this. ;)

The universe is sunny? That’s funny. And yer not replying to comments, which is not funny. I feel kinda lonely here….
