22/48 Boscastle, Cornwall
Filed in Blogathon 2007Cornwall was a frequent Easter vacation for our family, and I never grew tired of it. But Boscastle is my favorite place, and this is why.
Again a harbor and fishing village, it can easily be explored in an afternoon. The youth hostel is right down by the river that runs into the sea, and one can also walk way up high and look down. Tintagel is a five mile hike away along the clifftop.
It is a scenic town, and also a haven for hippies and new-agers. There is one wacky little shop with a secret door covered by a bookshelf–I saw people visibly shocked as the little shopkeeper appeared as if by magic. There was a holographic exhibit there, something I’d always found fascinating, but best of all is the Museum of Witchcraft.
Now, I know that witchcraft is a touchy subject for some, but this is a history museum. It shows the history of wise women and healers, of inquisitions, and of the terrible things done to women who were simply midwives. It is an interesting place and an eye-opening one. It’s nothing if not an exposition of mass hysteria and humans’ endless capacity for being nasty to one another.
It’s not a happy place. But it’s well worth a visit.
Boscastle is a peaceful place, where you can sit sheltered from the wind and relax. It suffered terrible flooding a few years ago, and yet the community has pulled together in a way that it would never otherwise have done. Its people are remarkable, and its location is sublime. I hope that they continue to rebuild and survive long into the future.
