Today is Bloggers Unite in Acts of Kindness day. The Bloggers Unite is a movement to blog about certain social causes on certain days and create an impact in that fashion.

I’m a little odd in that I feel that if I do a random act of kindness, it’s not something I want to brag about. It’s not that I’m ashamed–au contraire!–but that really it’s just something I do because I can or want to, not because I want to look good to others. I think that random acts of kindness should be a normal part of life, not something special. Wouldn’t the world be better that way?

But here’s one I’m going to tell you about, because I love cats. In the UK, the Olympic area is currently being cleared. The trouble is, there are hundreds of feral cats in the area and the builders/organizers are refusing rescue groups access. They’re lying about the extent to which the rescuers were given access and the cats are in trouble. Chances are that many will be crushed, and that will just not do.

So, I’m going to sign the petition, and help save the kitties. May I please urge you to do the same?

Here’s the link to the news article and here’s the petition/non-profit’s view of the issue.

That is just awful. Thanks for posting this information.

First of all, I signed the petition. I hope Camilia whats-her-name saves as many cats as possible. About not wanting to brag about acts of kindness, with respect, I beg to differ. If you get rewarded for kindness, it’s natural you’ll want to do more. Maybe you should add a category to your blog for kind acts, and post your acts and those of anyone who wants to add theirs. Then see whether your kindness-meter goes up or down…

Just signed the petition. The irony is, most people in the UK aren’t particularly interested in having the Olympics here anyway.

Thanks for visiting my site and commenting, Linda! Not sure if me signing the petition helps, not being a UK citizen, but I love the exposure you’re giving to their work saving those poor little kitties!

Kango: I’m still a UK citizen, but not a resident any more. And I signed.

As to whether or not going public with an act of kindness helps, I still stick by my prior comments. I think that an act of kindness is what it is, and a need for an audience makes the motives less pure. I simply don’t need an audience to force myself to do more acts of kindness. The warm fuzzies from inside, the sense of “yeah, that worked” are more than enough.

Life doesn’t need to be an accounting…doing an action can be plenty of reward all by itself.

Phil–I think that just raising a hand and saying ‘No’ is powerful sometimes. Thanks for visiting and helping out :)

Sorry for butting in again, but I just had to reply. Linda, you’re too good for your own good. :)

Anyway, I hope you never get to a stage where your mind calculates the benefit of every action you take, even your good deeds…Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Me too, Kango. (And I’m sorry I missed answering this one first time round.)
